Hirsutism (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common disorders affecting approximately 5%-10% of women of reproductive age of 12–45 years old.

One of the main symptoms is excess hair growth (hirsutism) mainly on the face, lower abdomen, and chest. This excess hair growth is caused by an increased level of male hormones (androgens). Although all women produce androgens, increased levels of androgens can lead to hirsutism.

Traditional forms of hair removal such as shaving, waxing and threading can solve the problem of excess hair temporarily, but most women with PCOS are looking for a long-term management solution. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices offer effective, and permanent, hair reduction treatment for women with PCOS.

The Lynton EXCELIGHT® IPL system makes treatment quick and easy by targeting pulses of light energy at the hair shaft with the aim of causing permanent damage to growth cells in the hair follicle. Hair follicles permanently destroyed will not produce new hairs. IPL treatments will significantly reduce the amount of hair present and will cause re-growth to be finer and grow more slowly.

Typically, 6-10 sessions of IPL are required to catch all hairs during the active or ‘anagen’ stage of hair growth. Following this, for individuals with PCOS, long-interval top-ups may be required to catch the new follicles as they come into the growth stage.
